During this summer of 2021, News12LI ran a series on the Best Beaches of Long Island and what makes each one special. On this segment that aired on July 30, 2021, News12 Long Island’s Caroline Flynn toured Tobay Beach and showcased all the activity on the ocean side, the bay side, the various restaurants and what makes Tobay Beach special, including the surfing.
As a longtime surfer of Tobay Beach I was interviewed about why I love surfing there. While other beaches might have potentially better conditions, I prefer it because of the relaxed atmosphere created by the fun loving and accomplished surfers who frequent Tobay Beach. Having ridden waves at Tobay for over 35 years, I can say the scene there is very friendly, welcoming and the surfers on average have a more accepting and inclusive attitude compared to other locations.
In addition, surfing at Tobay is a somewhat harder than other beaches because the sand bar is really far out from the shore. Sometimes the break can be over 150 yards out, which makes paddle strength and will to persevere through the waves more important than other beaches.
People who surf Tobay often do for years if not decades and the reason why people choose to come back and back is because of the enjoyable environment. Personally, I feel surfing Tobay has helped shaped who I am as a person and how I approach my life and my business. For me the time in the water is best spent among positive friendly people who value a meaningful and healthy shared experience. This approach is evident in my personal life and who I choose to do business with as owner of Boomer Productions, Inc. We are only given one lap on this thing called life and it makes sense to choose the more rewarding and meaningful path.
